Tens Of Thousands killed in Haiti quake

Washington, Jan 14 (DPA) Haitian President Rene Preval said estimates of the death toll in the devastating earthquake in capital Port-au- Prince could easily be in the tens of thousands, while other officials said more than 100,000 may have perished.

'Up to now I've heard 50,000, I've heard 30,000. Let's say, it's too early to give a number,' Preval told broadcaster CNN, conceding that any sort of official estimate was extremely difficult. 'I am still trying to understand myself the magnitude of the event.'

Earlier, he had told The Miami Herald that thousands may have been killed in the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that rocked the country Tuesday afternoon, and issued an appeal for world assistance. The damage was centred in and around the capital Port-au-Prince, home to about 1.9 million people.

Figures for the number of dead remain murky as the government tries to assess the damage.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale shook Haiti on Tuesday, causing several buildings to collapse, 40 and 45,000 American citizens in Haiti, few of them caught injuries. US forces are reaching in large number to help people for haiti earthquake relief.

New York, Jan 13 (DPA) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday 'hundreds' of people may have been killed by a strong earthquake and its aftershocks that hit Haiti a day earlier, while more than 100 UN staff in the poor Caribbean remained unaccounted for.

Senior UN officials said the unaccounted staff members were in the UN headquarters in Port-au-Prince and fewer than five staffers had been confirmed dead. Other UN staff were living in hotels, which collapsed, he said.

He said the earthquakes would trigger a major humanitarian crisis in addition to cutting off communication lines with the outside world. Ban said it had become 'very, very difficult' to get in touch with UN personnel in Port-au-Prince.

Edmond Mullet, a UN undersecretary general, was being sent to Haiti as soon as possible for a first-hand look at the situation, Ban said. There are some 3,000 UN peacekeepers in the Haitian capital of the total of more than 7,000 troops and 2,000 police operating in the country,

The nine-metre RH 560 rockets weigh 1.5 tonnes and carry a 100-kilograms payload of instruments each. The two-stage rocket will take the instruments 500 kilometres above the earth's surface.

The rockets fired from TERLS are smaller than RH 560. They will reach 75 to 120 kilometres above the earth. (ANI)
