Nokia on Tuesday announced the launch of two new touch-screen mobile devices — Nokia 5230 and Nokia 5530 XpressMusic — which are aimed at consumers who appreciate easy usage with the 'touch' interface and music lovers.

Nokia 5230, which features an easy to use music player with 33 hours of playback time, is priced at Rs. 10,500. It features a 'Media Bar' with quick access to your favourite media and applications, such as music, photos and YouTube or Ovi Share. It also comes with 2.0 megapixel camera and 3.2 inch wide screen.

On the other hand, Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, priced at Rs.13,999, is a music and entertainment device with a complete touch interface. It has a 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, while the home screen features one touch shortcuts to content and popular social networks, like Facebook and MySpace.

Both handsets would be available in early 2010.Nokia India Director Marketing Vineet Taneja said: "As the market leader, Nokia's value proposition is to offer products that combine aesthetics, technology and ease of use.

IIT Faculty Asks for 'scholastic pay' Updates

For the first time in the Indian Institutes of Technogy's 50-odd years of existence, faculty members have asked the government for a special additional "scholastic pay" of Rs 15,000 a month to compensate them for their "low-paying" jobs.
This special pay is expected to compensate the IIT faculty members for the "notional" financial loss they incur compared to people of comparable qualifications in other sectors.

"Every other government organization gives special incentive to its employees, except the IITs. We are resentful that the ministry has abandoned us like this,"
"The Govardhan Mehta Committee recognized the specialty of the premier institutions in its report, but the government reduces and undermines the status of IIT faculty members," Seth added.
On its website, IIT Bombay stated, "As per the central pay commission, all employees of Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) have been given special additional pay ranging from about Rs 2,000 per month to about 10 per cent of basic pay as a special grant for special achievements. Premier educational institutions have not been granted any such special treatment for the highly valued brands they have created, including mentoring new IITs in a short notice."
Other key demands in the memorandum include:
  1. A professional development allowance (PDA) of Rs 3 lakh (for international/national conferences, contingencies, membership fees) does not correspond with the increase in the costs, and should be increased to Rs 5 lakh for a block of three years;
  2. That the "lecturer" position be abolished and lecturers re-designated assistant professors, at an appropriate scale;
  3. That the recruitment of faculty with PhD degrees with less than three years of experience start with a minimum pay of Rs 30,000 and academic grade pay of Rs 8,000.
A key concern, the IITs say, is about attracting new faculty members. "If the government treats faculty members of IITs, which are institutions of international repute, like this, young and new people will not join us. The IITs are already suffering from a shortage of faculty. This could push more students to foreign shores," said Sunil Pandey, professor, mechanical engineering, and president, All India IIT Faculty Federation, IIT-Delhi. source, IIT faculty asks for 'scholastic pay' of Rs 15,000 per month.


Sixth Pay Commission Arrears Calculator

Government to release pay commission arrears
The government has decided to pay the second installment of the Sixth Pay Commission arrears.
"As in the case of the first installment of the arrears, government servants would be permitted to deposit their arrears in their GPF (general provident fund) accounts," an internal finance ministry memorandum said.

The first installment of 40 per cent was paid last fiscal.

The finance ministry has not given any deadline for the payment of the second tranche, but sources said it would probably be paid around Diwali.

According to official estimates, the arrears will cost the government Rs 29,373 crore.

There are about 3.8 million central government pensioners (excluding armed forces) as estimated by the All India Central Government Pensioners Association (AICGPA).  reports
