Engineers Day 2009 - The Sad Saga

Posted: 15 Sep 2009 02:31 AM PDT

Today, 15th of Sept 2009, with too hot a weather and a sea of humidity, there was really no reason for me to be very happy about the day. Tuesday always makes us remember that its not only one day past a weekend but there are 4 more working days in pipeline, to another weekend. With almost half of the day allready gone in my office, its was a very old friend of mine who pinged me "Happy Engineer's Day". Thanks Shantanu Gaur (Sr. DBA / IPaceSetters Pvt Ltd), you actually made me remember who we are.

The saddest part is, actually someone made me rememeber who I am. The fault is ovbious ours, we engineers. But more with computer engineers. More technicaly defining, an engineer is concerned with developing economical and safe solutions to practical problems, by applying mathematics and scientific knowledge while considering technical constraints. While regarding that of a computer engineer, its really very well said somewhere "A software developer must be part writer and poet, part salesperson and public speaker, part artist and designer, and always equal parts logic and empathy". Its because of us, who gets along with people of any profession, we forget even we have the right to atleast a greeting in the morning as "Happy Engineer's Day". Name it any profession, any industry, A bank, A retail, Any Railway Booking or a Air Ticket, A Developer somewhere is burning his midnight oil day after day for these.

Today as we celebrate Engineers Day (birthday of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya, an eminent Indian engineer and statesman) and while we talk of building Silicon Valley culture in India, I'd strongly say that we need more and more engineers for the country, but perhaps the country also needs to give us atleast a small feeling of being wanted. WIth India being said as the next IT giant after US, I hardly hear any of thousands of IT companies round the country, throwing any party to celebrate this day today. Well it seems, today being nothing unusual except me going to bed wishing myself only "Happy Engineer's Day".
